Hi James.

We have the choice to either hold the stone by hand, or use what are called a dop. The stones are held in place on the dop with a jewelers wax.

Here is a direct link to our forum using the term "dop". You can read through the many threads on the subject of holding the stone with a dop there.

Same thing with the grinding equipment. Simply do a search using the term "grinding" or "grind" and many results will be returned for you to read about.

Hope this helps just a little. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like!

There are quite a selection of different types of grinding and sanding equipment and abrasives to pick from.

I am just getting to the point where I would like to begin learning how to shape and polish some of my stones that I have found. The very first thing I need to now is what tool or products do I need to hold the stone in order to shape or gind it.

Thank you for replying. At this time I am looking for examples of different stones that have flaws that a beginner might not look for in making a cab. I have not made a cab yet. What ever you think on the amount. I would be glad to pay shipping. I just think I could learn more if I could see some that might lead to problems later.
Thanks TaoGem

Glad you enjoyed it Stan.

We are presently talking a bit about drilling on our forum under the Jewelry Tutorial board.

As far as buying some stones that are not any good to me. I would be happy to talk to you about them. If your just looking for a few, I would be happy to send you some for free. If you are looking for quite a few, then I would charge you very little.

Information sure helped me as a beginner. How and what is needed to drill a hole in the stones and not hurt them? How much for the stones you said were not any good. Would consider buying some.

Thank You
